Linda Perry’s column: New NICE Guidelines

Thursday 9 February 2017

The new NICE guidelines for ‘End of Life Care for Infants, Children and Young People with Life-Limiting Conditions- Planning and Management’ was published just before Christmas. .

It is important for us to review the whole document, and look at everything we do to see if it is in line with the new guidelines and make any changes required.

This is probably one of the most important documents for the work we do at Chestnut Tree House, so it is essential we review it very thoroughly. As you can imagine, this is no easy task – especially since the guidelines contain no less than 460 pages!

The guidelines are for all health and social care professionals as well as the commissioners, the families and children. The areas covered include communication, providing emotional and psychological support required, as well as managing distressing symptoms. Whilst I am regularly told how brilliant the teams are, both in the House and in the community, we need to ensure we are always informed and up to date with the most recent practices and advice, so that we can continue to look after children and their families with the very best care possible.

Linda Perry is Director of Children’s Services at Chestnut Tree House. Her column is published every Wednesday in the West Sussex Gazette.
This column was first published on Wednesday 26 October 2016.
