15th birthday memories: Mags Birdsall

Tuesday 6 November 2018

We have a great team at Chestnut Tree House, some of whom have been with us since we first opened.  As part of our 15th birthday celebrations, Care Support Worker, Mags Birdsall, has shared some of her memories of the last 15 years with us.

“I was a nursery nurse and came from being a deputy manager in a 24-place nursery to working in the Community Team for Chestnut Tree House. It was really quiet at the beginning and there were only about six of us. Now, there is a Community Team of about 36, working right across Sussex and South East Hampshire, providing care in families’ own homes.

“I have some amazing memories – the first time we got to use the hospice building, the wonderful equipment. I remember the first bath we did. We put in far too many bubbles and all we could see was the child’s head sticking out, surrounded by bubbles! We had loads of great outings too, like going to Hove Lagoon and playing in the sandpit, and playing in the ball pit at Drusillas.

“Obviously we have got bigger over the years and it’s good that we are providing care to many more children and families. We are seeing children with more complex healthcare needs, but it’s the diversity I love. Every day is different. I could be looking after a two-year-old one day and a 17-year-old the next. It’s so rewarding, being able to give families the best care and a break.

“My 15th birthday wish for Chestnut Tree House is for us to carry on going forward, to keep providing excellent care.

“To all our supporters, I would say, we still need you! Don’t forget us, keep caring for us so we can care back. Thank you!”
