Changes at Chestnut Tree House

Read about some of the changes which are being made at Chestnut Tree House to futureproof the hospice so that it’s suitable for current and future generations.

Since we opened in 2003, there have been no significant changes to the space and configuration of the hospice building. But, due to advances in medical technology over the same period, children with certain conditions are living longer than ever expected, with increasingly complex needs.

Having consulted with our families, we know that we need to make some updates to our facilities to meet the current and anticipated future needs of the children, young adults and families who use Chestnut Tree House. We also need to ensure that we meet current infection control and CQC requirements.

Discussions around a refurbishment project have been underway since early 2019 (pre-COVID-19). In light of the pandemic and the funding landscape, plans have been scaled back, however we will be making some changes during 2021 to futureproof the hospice.

This is being funded from designated reserves for development and refurbishment and is essential to ensuring we can continue providing the best quality of care for the families who need us.

What are we doing?

  • Ceiling heights in the Teenage Wing and pool area will be increased and improved mechanical hoisting installed to accommodate the increasing number of young adults now being cared for.
  • Piped oxygen and suction will be installed in the Teenage Wing and pool area for future use.
  • Improvements to the pool area will include the installation of new wet and dry changing areas to allow more children and young people to use the pool, greater privacy and dignity and increased enjoyment.

The refurbishment started in January 2021 and we anticipate it will take around eight months – the aim is to keep the hospice open throughout.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing support. 2020 was a difficult year for everyone, and you have continued to donate, fundraise, volunteer, and show your support in so many different ways. You are the future of children’s hospice care. Thank you.
