Tommy and a guinea pig

Meet Tommy

Tommy has a rare genetic condition called neurofibromatosis type 1, which causes tumours to grow along his nerves and has left him with mobility issues, learning difficulties and other complications.

Tommy’s condition is very severe – not many people have gone through what he has. There’s no cure, and no telling when another tumour might appear.

Tommy and his mum

Tommy is awaiting his next set of hospital check-ups and his mum, Chelsea, is worried sick about what the doctors might find.

As a result of his tumours, Tommy’s spine is curved, so he’s wobbly on his legs and often needs a wheelchair. Because he’s unable to control his bladder and bowels at night, Chelsea must get up to change him and his bedding – never getting a proper night’s rest.

Tommy and his support worker

Helen is a Healthcare Assistant at Chestnut Tree House. For the past two years, she's been looking after Tommy. She takes Tommy out on fun trips, so mum Chelsea can have some precious hours to relax, catch up on sleep or spend time with her other children.

Helen and Tommy sometimes go to the beach or an adventure park. But mostly Tommy loves hanging out at Chestnut Tree House! Playing video games, baking and playing in the hydrotherapy pool - having fun and making memories.

"At a time when many of us are feeling the pinch, your support is appreciated more than ever. That’s why I’d like to thank you on behalf of Chelsea, Tommy and all the other families you’re helping – they’ll always remember your kindness and the fun, carefree memories it makes possible."
