Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice provides constant education and training to healthcare professionals in palliative care for children.
Chestnut Tree House is committed to evidence based practice in children’s palliative care, promotes lifelong learning and the continual professional development of all staff.
We offer an annual training programme for internal staff. Courses range from our mandatory training, such as Moving and Handling and Safeguarding, to specialist training, such as Communication with non-verbal children or Palliative and Bereavement Care.
Chestnut Tree House also offers courses for external professionals at our education rooms.
St Barnabas Hospice (adult palliative care) also offers training. More information can be found on the St Barnabas House website.
The Care Team is made up of children’s, general and learning disability nurses, Clinical Educator, nursery nurses, nurse specialist, care support workers, therapists, GPs, consultants, administrative support, maintenance, kitchen and housekeeping staff.
Each individual in our team has been chosen for their skills, experience, qualifications and personal qualities.
A comprehensive competency framework has been developed and the team update this annually.
All staff and volunteers receive a comprehensive induction which takes into account the Healthcare Commission standards for working in a hospice.
There is a programme of learning and development for all staff this includes:

• Safeguarding children and vulnerable adults
• Infection control
• Health and safety
• Confidentiality
• Diversity
• Policies and procedures
• Resuscitation
Supervision is in place for all staff and delivered by an external supervisor.
