A few years ago, we weren’t able to care for children with complex conditions like Mikey’s.

But now we can.

Mikey's story

This is Mikey's story but being told by his proud mum, Chevonne.

Not long after my son Mikey was born, we realised he was struggling to breathe. The doctors told us he’d never be able to sit up or walk. It was one of the toughest days of my life.

“But as he got a little older, they were able to fit a tracheostomy tube in his throat to help him breathe, and two days later, my strong boy was sitting up. It’s been like that ever since – he’s surprised us and delighted us again and again. We never thought he’d communicate or play with his sisters. But now he can. He constantly amazes me.

“Mikey needs a ventilator regularly to help him breathe and until a couple of years ago, Chestnut nurses didn’t have the training to work the equipment that kept him alive. But when the big-hearted care team at the House saw there were children who urgently needed specialist care, they trained their nurses to look after those who needed long-term ventilator support.

“With the help of generous supporters, Chestnut were able to care for children with needs as complex as Mikey’s. Not just at Chestnut Tree House itself, but in children’s own homes, and even on fun trips out which would have been impossible in the past. These incredible nurses have also learned to care for children with more severe needs than Mikey’s, who need to be on a ventilator at all times.

“That’s what Chestnut has in common with Mikey. A fighting spirit. A determination to overcome every obstacle.”

It's a huge responsibility on my shoulders, to keep my only son breathing. Some nights, I don’t get a wink of sleep.

“Mikey’s unique in so many ways – he loves riding his bike and he’s a cheeky chap. Plus he’s the only one in the world with his condition. The doctors to this day don’t know what syndrome he has.

“What we do know is that he struggles to breathe and needs constant, 24/7 supervision. He needs regular ventilator care so his body has enough oxygen. And if his tracheostomy tube ever comes out in the night, he can’t breathe.”

There are times I’ve had to say goodbye to Mikey, when his tracheostomy has come out and we’ve had to resuscitate him. It’s a heartbreak I cannot begin to explain.

“It’s hard to express what your support means to my family. Most importantly, it means playtime for Mikey. It means he gets the joy of feeding reindeer, or of playing tag in the garden. All whilst getting the care he needs from Chestnut nurses, whether that’s at home, or for a weekend stay at the House.

“For me, it means sleep! It means date nights with my husband, and time with my daughters. I honestly don’t know how I would have got through the last few years without Chestnut’s support. And without people like you!

“I hope you’ll support them again today. For the sake of children like my Mikey, who are one in a million, and who need the care that Chestnut can give them.

“Thank you”
