Making a splash at Saltdean Lido

Families from Chestnut Tree House enjoyed swimming sessions at Saltdean Lido this month (July 2025).

The glorious, warm weather is the perfect excuse for families to venture out to the local swimming pools and parks. As simple as this may seem, it’s not always an easy decision for those caring for young people with complex health needs.

Alice Stovold, the Activities Co-ordinator at Chestnut Tree House said: “Many places do not have accessible toilets or changing areas and it’s difficult to find a swimming pool that provides a hoist.

“Thankfully, Saltdean Lido generously offered Chestnut Tree House a day of free swimming sessions. They are well equipped with everything the Chestnut families need.

“It was wonderful to see our Chestnut children and young people soaking up the sun whilst having a paddle with their carers and/or parents. The staff at the Lido were extremely friendly and welcoming, they could not do enough to accommodate our needs and were extremely helpful.”

She also explained that the hoist allows children that use mobility chairs to be safely lifted in and out of the pool, and there is an accessible place to change that allows dignity and privacy.

It’s gestures like this that allow families to make precious memories, and the charity have expressed their gratitude to Saltdean Lido for making it possible.

Jan attended the swimming session with her daughter Emma and said: “It’s great to be out in the sun and having a swim. It’s surprisingly hard to find accessible swimming pools so it’s good to know this is here. Emma loves people and she’s enjoying watching everyone else playing in the pool and she’s taking it all in.”

The Lido swim is just the beginning of Chestnut Tree House’s fun-filled summer. The Activities Team is putting on a full spread of special events to support families over the holidays – ranging from Wet Wheels accessible speedboat rides, to parent and carer pottery making sessions.  We are even hosting their very own music festival for families!
